Pontefract RUFC is a community rugby union club, which has the objective of providing the best facilities to enable the men, women, boys and girls of the local area to enjoy the benefits of playing rugby. We welcome new members as players or supporters.
Rugby Union has been played in Pontefract since the late 19th Century. A Pontefract Team won the Yorkshire Cup in 1891 but was disbanded during the war years. The current club was formed in 1947 and was previously known as the "Old Pomfretians." We have been based at the Moor Lane ground and our known as Pontefract RUFC since 1967. Previously games were played at Pontefract Park. The club won the Yorkshire Shield in 1953 and 1984.
Our 1st XV compete in North East Regional 2 Division which is Level 6 of the RFU national league structure. We also have further senior teams (2nd XV, Development XV and a Vet's XV) as well as a range of Junior Teams for both boys and girls. The club is pursuing a plan to increase the number of boys and girls participating in the sport, and in particular to be able to field a Senior Women’s team in the future.
We look forward to welcoming you to the club
