The aims of Northern England Labour Left (NELL) are:
To organise and develop the Labour Left in Northern England to enable the election to positions of influence at all levels within the Labour Party, trade unions, socialist societies and public office of left candidates who support our Values and Political Goals.
To this end NELL will operate on a not for profit basis through a democratic One Member One Vote membership structure.
It will:
Encourage affiliations by other Labour Left Groups from across the North East and North Cumbria to a regional Labour Left organisation
Maintain the principle of subsidiarity. Local and regional group decisions made by local and regional group members
Create a stronger collective voice for Northern England in the Party and other organisations sharing the same political objectives
Facilitate organisation and communication within the region across:
CLP area groups
Unions
Socialist Societies
Diversity Groups including Women’s, BAME, LGBT, Disabled and Youth Groups
Regional structures
Mobilise to support local election campaigns both physically and via social media, collaborating with NELL affiliated groups
Collaborate with, including affiliation to, other left groups, national or otherwise
Share skills, experience and resources to deliver programmes for Political Education and Future Candidate Development
Develop a constitution and rules for governance that can be amended through the OMOV democratic process at the Annual General Meeting
Values
Northern England Labour Left:
Believes that injustice and inequality should be abolished and that privilege should be replaced by fairness
Agrees that everyone in society should contribute according to their ability
Expects the most vulnerable in our society to be cared for with dignity and respect
Opposes all forms of persecution and discrimination, including racism and prejudice of all kinds
Promotes internationalism, peace, and solidarity, and the democratic rights of all peoples, especially those suffering persecution
Is an inclusive organisation that rejects unjust treatment or judgement of people and respects both natural justice and freedom of speech
Promotes democracy and accountable working-class representation within and throughout the Labour Party and trade unions
Works for the election of an authentically democratic socialist Labour government
Trade Union recognition in all workplaces and the repeal of anti-trade union legislation
To actively campaign for the Green New Deal in the fight against climate change nationally and internationally
Public ownership and investment in our UK transport, energy, communications infrastructure and water systems and especially in the NHS & Social Care
Reform of Labour Party complaints and disciplinary procedures so that they are fit for purpose. Full implementation of the Chakrabarti report and an effective means of addressing complaints related to abuse of procedures and rules
Oppose austerity and cuts to council spending and eliminate poverty, zero hour contracts and bogus self-employment
Oppose all forms of racism including antisemitism, all other forms of discrimination and the growth of the far right
Ethical international policies based on justice and peace which by definition includes the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people
Democratisation of Labour Party electoral processes including Open Selection of MPs, Elected Mayors, Councillors, NEC and elected Party Officers, as well as commitment to transparent and accountable governance procedures
Support the adoption and implementation of Socialist policies by building on and developing the ideas underlying the 2017 and 2019 Labour Party General Election Manifestos
