The Kingston Independent Residents Group (KIRG) was formed by residents in Kingston upon Thames to provide a strong, independent voice for people that live across the Royal Borough. We love where we live and know it the best; so we believe that on local issues, locals should decide and not the national party whip.
Fortunately, in Kingston, there is an alternative to mainstream parties.
The Kingston Independents are now the official opposition on Kingston Council – with twice as many seats as the Kingston Conservatives.
Independents believe in standing up for ordinary residents.
On the Council, Independents proposed and got a motion passed which set up the Council’s ‘Kingston Winter Fuel Payment’, to make sure people just above the threshold for Pension Credit received a £200 payment this winter.
Independents are demanding the Council divest from companies involved in the arms trade – and our motion will be debated on 1st April.
And Independents were the only group on the Council that proposed a fully-funded rent freeze for social tenants this year – instead of the inflation-busting rent rise proposed by the ruling Kingston Liberal Democrats.
Together, we’re bringing about real change for ordinary people in Kingston.
Next May, there will be elections for every council seat in Kingston. The Kingston Independents are listening to local people, acting on their views and are determined to bring better leadership to the council – that puts people first.
Many people have made a break from the establishment parties, in Kingston and elsewhere. They tell me they are fed up with politicians breaking their promises and just thinking they can get away with it.
So I hope you may consider joining us as we strive to create a better, brighter Kingston.
Councillor James Giles
Leader of the Opposition on Kingston Council
