The Hertford Astronomy Group exists to help people enjoy astronomy at every level of experience. Our members range from casual stargazers to experienced observers using advanced telescopes and imaging equipment. Interests across the group include visual observing, astrophotography, planetary observation, comet hunting, and general astronomical research.
Founded in 2005, the Group aims to promote the science of astronomy and encourage wider interest and learning in the subject.
Our main activities include monthly meetings, usually held on the second Wednesday of each month at the University of Hertfordshire’s Hatfield Campus (please see www.hertsastro.org.uk for current details). We also take part in public outreach events such as the annual Hertford Dark Sky Event at Hertford Castle, where members share their enthusiasm and equipment with the public.
Members have access to an observing site at Bramfield Village Hall near Hertford, with observing sessions coordinated via WhatsApp and arranged subject to weather conditions. We maintain an active and supportive community of observers who are happy to share their experience and equipment. A range of telescopes and eyepieces is available for loan to established members, allowing them to try different instruments before purchasing their own.
The Group also includes an astrophotography subgroup, which meets regularly at the University of Hertfordshire to focus on imaging techniques and related topics. In addition, we host popular practical sessions such as “Practical Sessions”, offering hands-on assistance with telescope setup and use.
We publish a monthly newsletter and maintain a website at www.hertsastro.org.uk, where further information about our activities can be found. Members also regularly attend Institute of Physics lectures and observatory open evenings at local university campuses.
