CBO was formed in 1954 and is Northern Ireland’s only bird observatory. The CBO is situated on Old Lighthouse Island off the County Down coast. Old Lighthouse Island is one of three islands in the Copeland group. Collectively, the three Copeland Islands form both an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA).
The CBO is a member of the Bird Observatories Council and operates under the guidance of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). Its main aims are to collect data on migratory and breeding birds, to manage the Island for the benefit of birds, and to develop and manage a conservation education programme. It is operated on a part-time basis by volunteers and is open from late March to the end of October.
Please join CBO and help us do our part for nature!
