BSHM is a friendly, welcoming society and is open to all. We are a charity administered solely by volunteers who bring an impressive wealth of experience from academia and industry.  BSHM members encompass a variety of people from diverse backgrounds: researchers, teachers, students, historians, mathematicians, scientists, engineers and some with a general interest in cultural history. About a third of our members are based outside the UK, predominantly north America and continental Europe.

We have three membership categories:

  • Ordinary member: £35  per annum.
  • Concessionary rate (retired, unwaged or student member): £20 per annum.
  • Under 25  (for 2024, those born in 1999 or later): £5 per annum.

Members of BSHM benefit from reduced admission to most of our events, and receive the BJHM Journal, as well as regular emails detailing forthcoming events of interest  (including non-BSHM events). The Journal is also available on-line to BSHM members (upon request).  On-line access provides our full back catalogue going back to 1986. To activate your online access, follow the instructions in this  announcement .

External subscriptions

Members may subscribe to the journal Historia Mathematica for the special rate of £40 for 2024 (note this price is adjusted from previous years to take into account the changed GBP-USD exchange rate). Members may also join the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics (CSHPM/SCHPM), for an additional £12. If you wish to take up either or both of these options, please add them to your payment cart.

  • If you want to pay annually by direct debit and thus take advantage of the resulting yearly price reductions (Ordinary membership £31, Concessionary membership £18) please  email treasurer@bshm.ac.uk   between 1st October and15th December to arrange a direct debit for the forthcoming year.  The payment will be deducted around the middle of January.
