The Bury Standard 4 group was founded in 1984 by a small group of enthusiasts, the group has now grown to well over 150 Share Holders and Members.
The Bury Standard 4 Group’s original aim was to purchase a BR Standard Class 4 Tank Engine from Woodham’s of Barry Island. The group went down to Woodham’s scrap yard to inspect the three remaining BR Standard 4 Tank engines and it was decided that 80097 was the engine to purchase. The intention was to restore it for use on the East Lancashire Railway.
Since then, the group has expanded and now owns a second ex. Barry locomotive, Ivatt Class 2 Mogul No. 46428, on which restoration has now started. The group also owns a fleet of freight wagons, a sales coach, a loco shed and engineering workshop.
